The minimum credit score needed to get most Discover credit cards is 700 or above. There are a few Discover cards for which there’s no minimum credit score requirement, such as the Discover it® Secured Credit Card which you can get with a bad credit score (below 640).

Minimum Credit Score Needed for Each Discover Card

  • Discover it® Secured Credit Card: No minimum score, applicants with bad credit are eligible for approval (below 640).
  • Discover it® Student Cash Back: Available to applicants with limited credit (less than 3 years of credit history).
  • Discover it® Student Chrome: Available to applicants with limited credit (less than 3 years of credit history).
  • Discover it® Cash Back: Good credit (700+) required.
  • NHL® Discover it®: Good credit (700+) required.
  • Discover it® Chrome: Good credit (700+) required.
  • Discover it® Miles: Good credit (700+) required.

There aren’t any Discover cards that flat-out require excellent credit, currently. But we recommend a score of at least 700 for the cards that require good credit for approval. If you’re not sure how your credit is doing, you can check your latest credit score for free on WalletHub.

You should note that while your credit score is important, Discover will also consider other factors, such as how your income compares to your debt, your employment status, whether you own or rent your home, how many loans and lines of credit you already have open, and more.

Two people I know with scores in the low 600s were both denied for a Discover It secured credit card, so there's a lot more to it than just your score. I didn't even know you could be denied for a secured credit card.

I got approved with an Experian score of 626. I got offered a choice of two cards, I took the Discover It Cash back card. I have a lot of open accounts, but only one has a very high balance. My utilization score is in the 30s. It has been several years since I made a late payment but it still shows on my credit. I only carry a balance on one card, I pay off anything else each month. So hopefully that helps you decide whether or not to get to the actual application.

How can I improve my Discover card approval odds?

Your Discover card approval odds depend mostly on your credit, income, existing debt obligations and, of course, which Discover credit card you have your eye on. Most Discover cards require good credit or better for approval. But the Discover it® Secured Credit Card is available to people with bad credit, and there’s a pair of student cards that don’t require prior credit experience. In any case, like with any other credit card, there are no guarantees that one will get...

What is the best Discover card for bad credit?

The best Discover card for bad credit is definitely the Discover it® Secured Credit Card. In fact, it’s really the only Discover card that you can count on getting despite a bad credit score. Here’s how it works: When you apply, you place a security deposit of at least $200, which will become your credit line if you’re approved. This refundable deposit acts as collateral for Discover, reducing their risk.

But that’s not all you need to know...

How do you qualify for Discover pre-approval?

There are two ways you can qualify for Discover pre-approval: You can either proactively check which credit cards you pre-qualify for using Discover’s free online tool, or you could receive a pre-approved Discover offer in the mail.

There’s a good chance you’ll be pre-approved for at least one Discover card, as Discover has cards for people of all credit levels. But it’s important to remember that pre-approval does not actually guarantee you’ll get a...
